What Really Drives Custom Software Development Cost
The dominant factor is rarely the technology stack — it is almost always unclear scope. Every open question in the brief turns into a contingency inside the number you receive. A supplier that has no visibility into what happens on the unhappy path must assume a pessimistic case. Putting two weeks into a proper discovery often reduces the final cost by far more than haggling over hourly rates.
Connections to other systems are another reliable source of cost. A feature that touches only your own data is easy to estimate; the same functionality connected to an old accounting system is a different problem. The unknown hides in the other system: laravel vs next.js poor documentation, waiting on someone else's team, data that does not match your model. Ask each bidder to price integrations separately, because this is the usual source of overruns.
Quality attributes silently change the estimate. An internal tool used by twenty people is a very different build from the same idea handling public traffic. Compliance work, availability guarantees, scalability, audit logging and multi-language support each add real engineering time. Put them in the brief or else expect them to arrive later as change requests.
Who actually does the work matters. A rate card says almost nothing ruby on rails vs laravel its own: one senior developer at twice the price is often cheaper per delivered feature than two inexperienced developers who need heavy code review. Check too who else is billed: delivery management, quality assurance, release engineering and design have to be done by someone, kubernetes software development company but these should be named rather than hidden inside a blended rate.
The quoted figure is never the total cost. Expect cloud costs, subscriptions and licences, monitoring and a maintenance allowance for outsource laravel development every year the software runs. A reasonable rule of thumb says that a live system consumes a noticeable fraction of the initial investment every year simply to stay current. Leaving it out of the budget is the classic mistake.
